Current USN "professional historians" at the NHHC very much emphasize warfighting, along with the significance of logistics and the unchanging nature of geography. I point you to our recent study of ADM Turner's preparations when he was in charge of War Plans in '40-41 and the conduct of logistics during the Guadalcanal campaign, including the supply line/airfield race in SoPac in the Spring of 1942. See the link to this pamphlet which I helped write after an ask by RDML Williams.
To be fair, I do not disagree with you at all regarding the focus of historians at academic institutions, and even some at the war colleges and academies. A sad state of affairs. Director Cox is not of their ilk.
What did she get her PhD in? "In her dissertation project, “Unsuitable and Incompatible: Ensign Vernon “Copy” Berg, Bisexuality, and the Cold War U.S. Navy,” Haley chronicles the incongruities in official policy between the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the armed forces as it related to the compatibility of homosexuals—a catch-all that includes gay men and women and bisexuals—with federal employment and active duty military service. "
At the least, the PDF is still being shared with stars at PacFlt as well as N722, so there's that at least. Would appreciate your comments on Ch.6, if any.
Re Haley, I'll agree the range of hires are different than the past, but one tries with what one receives.
To emphasize your point, would a mash-up of "Wang Yi's Pacific Island Tour" map with the above "Central Pacific 'rings of approach' map put the 'second island chain' strategy in equally sharp relief?

Really Tim. Are they, or are we just enjoying the fumes left in the tank? Have you met the most recent hire at NHHC? Meet Heather M. Haley, PhD. https://twitter.com/GALLIFRAEAN/status/1554626122071085056

Great map. And thanks, Tim, for the downloadable pub. Very interesting!
