Housekeeping Note: A lot of the new subscribers here have probably figured out that I’ve been blogg’n as “CDR Salamander” since 2004. All those posts - the good, the bad, and the “it was a different time, my opinions have changed a bit” posts can be found at the OG blog at blogspot - and will always be there, google willing. However, as our British friends might say, this "blogspot" hosted part of the blog is "going in ordinary" for reasons I outlined earlier in March. I will no longer post there in parallel and instead will only post here. As you are already subscribers to the substack, this won’t impact you at all.
So, to mark a pivot point in the history of this blog, let's go back to 2006 and the first Fullbore Friday entry. The FbF aperture is a bit more open than when we started, but it is a popular regular feature.
Something new and regular, I think. Kind of like Sunday Funnies except I will post more than one thing on Fridays.
Each Friday I will start with a view of something near and dear to my heart, and that of Marines. Big guns. When able, I will provide a link to the Navy Historical Center if you want to see and learn more about the boat in question.
Of all the old battlewagons, none are closer to my heart than the one my Grandfather served on in WWI. The USS Arkansas.
Note the details. Always love the details. One more thing. Here is a cruise book from their 1913 Med Cruise.
BB's rock the block.
There's just something squicky millennial about laying in the sand watching a cruise missile fly overhead as opposed to, say, half a dozen Buicks full of explosive chugging their way to the target. The physical results may be identical but anybody who has seen serious NGF will attest it's the Fist of God.
Suckas better get in here. You’re gonna get marked UA and have extra duty.
