I was an Aero major. Not Poly Sci or some such. So, serious question: I’ve heard this for years now, but what’s a “nation state”? The USA is a nation. Florida, for example, is a state. What’s a “nation state”?
Within political science, a nation is defined as a group of people who share some kind of common heritage/culture and dwell on a particular patch of ground.
A state, however, is defined as an entity that has final authority over a particular patch of ground and a group of people.
A nation-state is what happens when the boundaries of a particular patch of ground inhabited by a nation and controlled by a state at least roughly coincide, like Denmark or the USA.
It should be noted that the following situations can occur:
1. A nation without a state, like the Kurds.
2. A state with more than one nation under their jurisdiction, like the UK.
3. A nation spread out over multiple states, like the Serbs in Serbia and Bosnia.
The USA is a terrible example of a nation-state - no single national entity has dominated the US since at least the 19th century. Denmark is excellent though, as would be Japan or Finland.
Depends on how you define "nation." I would argue that while the people of the United States do not have a shared heritage, they do have a shared culture.
I disagree, as would the natives, Amish, Mormons, blacks, mestizos, Germans (as Ben Franklin fretted about) and Irish. Culture is directly downstream from heritage. Even the modern 'propositional nation' test fails when you ask each of these very disparate groups what exactly the proposition is and how it is executed. The US doesn't embody the 'natio' criteria in the same way as, say, Lithuania
The (theoretical) differences between those groups over what it means to be American (and I would defy you to find any meaningful difference between those of English or German descent on cultural issues now) are the equivalent of whether the Greens, the CDU, or AfD properly represents what it means to be German.
The vast gulf between cultural Germans and English colonist in 18th and 19th century America especially in terms of religious practices and mores speaks for itself if Franklin isn't a sufficient subject matter expert. The differences among all the groups are far from theoretical and are the reason the US is headed in the direction of Yugoslavia (from the example above).
Since you brought it up, the Greens have no claim whatsoever to the definition of German-ness, their entire ideological thrust being regurgitated, post-exodus Frankfurt School talking points. They are, quite literally, a German culture eviscerating machine.
This isn't to bash on post-Reconstruction America's schizophrenic and bastard legacy - the German Federal Republic is not a perfect example of a nation state, having been amalgamated in the late 19th century.
My whole point is that nation-state is a very specific term that has distinct metrics that the modern US doesn't qualify for.
Considering that Denmark has little congruence with Greenlands indigenous people, I'd say they aren't much of a nation-state. One could argue that the Faeroe islands also break their classification.
Do the Russians hold this PHD from Australia with the same esteem as you seem to?
I’m asking because I was asked to pass the Russian Proficiency Examination. It goes without saying, I must present that Certificate to the Russian Embassy in Washington D.C.

You mistake 'political control' for 'integral part'. Greenland is an insignificant contribute to the Danish body politic and cultural history.
Which shows that Denmark is not a legitimate part of the Danish Nation-state, or body politic.
