My last Thanksgiving away from home was also my last Thanksgiving on active duty; Thanksgiving of 2008 in Kabul.
The German run DFAC did their best, but Thanksgiving is not a NATO holiday, so we Americans did our best … even putting up with the Canadians reminding us, “We have a Thanksgiving too!”

Nothing beats a Thanksgiving at sea, though. From small ships to the big CVNs, I never knew a ship that did not give 110% in the galley. It was still a workday…but no one went hungry.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Few nations, if any, have been as blessed as ours. Ponder that, and make it better for the next generation.
.
If you went hungry on a ship at sea, it was your own fault.
You'll need a few eye drops and kleenex for the dust. The system will not let me post the pic directly, alas.

NATO doesn't recognize the Fourth of July either. July 4, 1978 USS TATTNALL was part of STANAVFORLANT in Rosyth, Scotland and had to get underway that day. As a protest a group dressed up as the Spirit of '76 marched over to the Royal Navy frigate and dumped some teabags over the side.
