In their first and only "free" election the Gazans Hamas got a plurality. Most of the rest voted for Fatah. So, yes, there are no innocent people there.

Seems like there is room for training some of those 100M Christians to protect themselves...from Boko Haram AND if the government tries to come down on them. Tell Tinubu we are going to help set up private, armed security teams - a lot of them - for the Christians and that they will be watched and under our protection if attacked. Secure the soft targets and make it sting if the Islamists try to attack...don't be easy meat. God finds many ways to walk you through the lions den...sometimes it is people protecting you from the lions in his name.

Sounds like we need to give a contract to Brother Prince.

CDR Sal, on target, fire for effect. To misquote your article: "You may not be interested in the jihad, but the jihad is interested in you." At its most basic form, Islam is like a cuckoo bird. It kicks out the residents actively and sometimes violently (like Nigeria). Alternatively (or concurrently) via immigration and "out reproducing" the residents it forces them out socially, economically, and politically (see Europe and Dearborn, MI). A major tenant of this political ideology masquerading as a religion is that it is "okay to lie to infidels". Once you get what you want, any agreement you made with resident leftists becomes null and void. (See London and Brussels). OBTW, the Catholic Church is complicit in this, as high ranking Vatican officials like Cardinal Parolin have framed this as a "social conflict, not religious, between herders and farmers". As a lifelong Catholic, that's hard to stomach. The Vatican seems to feel taking a "go along to get along" approach is more profitable, and by doing so they will be "eaten last". Not sure dhimmitude is a road to salvation.

The leftists don't understand, that Christians and Jews are better tolerated than atheists, pagans.... Islam is a later branch of the same tree that produced jews and christians.

from google ai: " how does islam generally treat nonreligious & pagans vs jews & christians where islam is in power?

AI Overview

In Islamic governance, Jews and Christians (People of the Book) historically received protected status (dhimmi) under Islamic law, allowing religious practice and legal autonomy in exchange for loyalty and a special tax (jizya), while pagans often faced harsher choices like conversion, exile, or death, though Quranic verses emphasize justice, kindness, and "no compulsion in religion," guiding Muslims to treat all non-Muslims kindly if they aren't hostile. " . Apply the "actions not words" to that "kindly part"

Many historical accounts of islam have a big bias: publically say anything negative about islam, and some fanatic will make it his goal in life to cut your throat.

This is Rwanda, all over again - only without (so far) the fing United Nations....

The US will be blamed for whatever we do, don't do, or happens.

So, instead of involving ourselves in anything kinetic, lets arm the Christians (wow! All those weapons we destroyed in Afghanistan and Iraq would have been handy now!) and let them handle their own defense?

Heartfelt thanks again to Great Britain's colonial mapmakers, architects of a conservative 75% of all the world's conflicts. I guess my reply to the Commander would be: yes, but... Muslim-Christian conflict in Nigeria dates back to the end of colonialism in 1960 and well before considering the way the British used ethnic and religious models to divide/conquer and choose elites and fill jobs in colonial governance. In Nigeria Muslim-Christian conflict not so neatly encompasses nationalism, national politics, tribal politics, religious politics, raw power, money, oil, and all the spoils thereof in addition to religion. Just as Somalia was a knee-jerk reaction to help starving people without any consideration to local history, politics, and the origins of that famine to begin with, we would be well advised to take a deep breath and a much deeper dive into understanding Nigeria before we frame the current situation as: The jihadis are at work again and WE MUST MILITARILY INTERVENE NOW TO SAVE CHRISTIANS!

I blame Gavrillo Princip.

First salvo in a serbosniphobia campaign, Jet? I am in, kinda...but I'd have preferred Princip to have been Croatian. Just sayin'...you know, that whole Ustaše thing.

Nah, just looking at the root cause. For such a small area the Balkans sure played a rather outsized role in shaping the modern world post WWI.

One could argue "just before" also.

I don’t think the UK forced Germany to invade Belgium in 1914.

You don't seem to be too familiar about Victoria's family structure, or her attempts to keep them all speaking to each other.

It didn't work. I suggest you read "The Proud Tower" and "The Guns of August" both by Barbara Tuchman for som background.

"Heartfelt thanks again to Great Britain's colonial mapmakers, architects of a conservative 75% of all the world's conflict"

Feature, not a bug.

Pete's avatar

Agree about intervening but I am getting tired of today’s murderers blaming the UK for what they a century ago.

Muslim-Christian conflict dates back about 1500 years, Nigeria is just a relatively new theater of war. The "front line" has moved from a small part of Arabia to Nigeria, Europe, etc.

timactual's avatar

"Great Britain's colonial mapmakers, architects of a conservative 75% of all the world's conflicts."

Because Hutus and Tutsis, Luo and Kikuyu, Muslim and Hindu, and all God's other chillun were living in peace before the Brits stirred things up and would be living in peace still if those White Devils had just stayed at home.

Tom's avatar

Thing is, a lot of these things are true at the same time--i.e., there is a farmer vs. herder conflict, a tale as old as recorded history, but the herders are Muslim, the farmers are Christian, and the religious difference gives the herders extra motivation and a clearer conscience to justify their predations on the farmers.

However, this doesn't change the fact that the only way you're going to get these boys to quit is to show them that all they're going to get if they keep going is shallow graves.

IMHO the U.S. DoW should create an all volunteer unit of American Foreign Legionnaires. Brigade size should be about right. Provide logistics and air support. Similar to the Marine Raiders, but mission set of the French Foreign Legion. When incidents like this occur the foreign government can sign-off on employment on their soil, and provide support...or not. Presidential approval would be required for employment.

Cool! An outfit specifically set up to go to hotspots all around the world, armed to the teeth with the latest and greatest unaliving gear, and with a blank sheet of paper for RoEs. Wow! I wish to hell I was 19 years old again...

That's the ticket . . . LOL . . . UN Blue helmets. Make sure they are Chinese and they will die on the job.

The atrocities are real, but the root causes are more mixed than the post suggests. Nigeria’s instability is jihadist + criminal + ethnic + governance failure. Oversimplifying the conflict into a single narrative — such as Christian persecution— misrepresents the reality on the ground, and frankly makes it harder to convince Americans to support missions in the African theater.

Jetcal1's avatar

There is no answer except an internal response by the government. And given the Muslim majority there will be no response. There will probably be a civil war dividing the country, after that we'll see another war with the North going after the oil fields in the South.

How many people in the Department of War can speak Fulani, or even Nigerian Pidgin? Or is this just going to be “Kill them all and let God sort them out”?

As a side note, that Nigeria has such restrictive gun laws is a sick joke. At the point where a government can't keep guns out of the hands of terrorists or suppress groups like Boko Haram, even the most hardcore gun control advocate should understand that said government has no right to tell its people that obtaining the means to defend themselves is illegal.

Billy's avatar

The purpose of gun laws is to disarm lawful citizens, not to disarm criminals & terrorists.

timactual's avatar

Speaking of sick jokes, Israel's strict gun laws probably made a large contribution to the Oct. 7 death toll. All those rough and ready Sabras who made every kibbutz a fortress are long gone.
