Having worked in NATO for four years, you quickly realize that Europeans treat it as a jobs program for the area near the bases. In fact, my favorite NATO story was when I went to a meeting of all of the national admirals as an aide to the Italian navy. In the middle of proceedings, one of them commented "This all sounds nice, but do you see any Americans here?" I chuckled as the only American in the room, but it's no secret to anyone in the alliance how things really work. The rot goes much deeper than you think.

Nice weave of the recent history into a current assessment. Excellent writing. You would have been excellent on the staff of National Review back with Buckley was there and Sullivan was editor. You must have felt constrained in writing on active duty but I'm sure you found a way Sal... Cheers to you.
