"This made no sense to me."

The goal of Hamas et al. is not peace or a two-state solution, it is the destruction of Israel, the Jews, and the establishment of a world-wide caliphate. That so-called "peace" agreement is counter-productive to those goals. Giving up power and their weapons is not going to happen.

Heritage Americans? What does that mean? No one who came after 1787 need apply?

NEC338X's avatar

Ignorance of American history can be found in every corner across the political spectrum. This ignorance scurries like cockroaches from one dimly lit corner to another. So called enlightened professional educators in high schools and tenure-protected professors in the universities would rather indoctrinate with the words of hate purveyors than teach the actual deeds that made our Republic great. When was the last time you heard anyone quote George Washington's address to the Newport Hebrew congregation? https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-06-02-0135

Pete's avatar

I visited that synagogue when I was at the war college.

Tucker will probably accuse George Washington of having taken money from AIPAC.

The Jews are greatly outnumbered. Who do you think is next on the list?

well said, Sir. should be SHOUTED from the media and white house and all, to clarify in simple terms, the Truth of it all.

"Americans"? I think not. The absurd policy of the U.S. countenancing "dual citizenship" (absent the explicit and onerous renunciation process) is the reason these Israelis are/were counted as "Americans."

The Scuttlebutt's avatar

Uh, no. There were at least five tourists caught up in that shit.

Sicinnus's avatar

Over a hundred foreign nationals had their lives taken. The attack was nothing more than a hoard let loose. Be it Phillipine nurses, Thai day laborers, or a German fashion model - the hoard only cared about bloodletting.

Pete's avatar

That’s what HAMAS does.

Richard Bicker's avatar

OK, someone check my math...

46 "Americans" - 5 Americans = 41 "Americans"

We good now?

The Scuttlebutt's avatar

probably not. I know of at least five, but that does not mean there were not more that were "Pure Americans" and not the "dual citizens" that you sneer at. I really don't understand the problem you seem to have. None of them were combatants, they were mostly at a music festival for Gods' sakes. No, anyone that sneers at the dead of October 7 I will never be "good" with.

My daughter married into a Jewish family, she and her husband live in NYC near NYU. She texted me once that a mob was walking down the street in front of their building chanting "Kill the Jews."

I told her the only real response to that was interlocking fields of automatic weapons fire. I still feel that way.

Pete's avatar

Well said.

I, too was shocked by the unholy alliance between the Communists, Jihadists and the woke Reich in their hatred for Israel in particular and Jews in general.

I was particularly disappointed in the likes of Tucker Carlson, Andrew Napolitano and others who are undermining Donald Trump as he tries to undo the damage done to our country by the far left.

What I find most distressing is to see the Democrat party of Harry Truman, JFK, Hubert Humphrey and Henry Jackson degenerate into the party of Bernie Sanders, AOC and the Squad and Zohran Mandani under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Charles Schumer.

None of this bodes well for America and I haven’t even gotten to Starmer and Macron.

Yes, the thin veneer of civilization wore through, to show the hatred of Jews again, not just here in the U.S., but over the world. Israel still has not done enough to maintain their freedom amongst authoritarians. And we've let a lot of Moslems into the U.S. over the last several decades, who have revealed that they cannot be trained into democratic civilization.

Hilary Smith's avatar

Leaving aside morality for a moment, what was Hamas' political goal that October 7th? Surely they knew that they couldn't hold any Israeli territory and the damage to Israeli military strictly in terms of lives and equipment lost was very small. So why did they do it? One possibility is to explicitly provoke a massive Israeli reaction resulting in thousands of Gazan casualties including children (which apparently bothers Hamas not one whit). How can the Israelis be the "good guys" when they are doing that day after day? Quoting Wikipedia, one of Clausewitz's aphorisms is "War is the continuation of policy with other means." In my view, Hamas's policy to exterminate the Jews got a huge boost by Israel's reaction to October 7. Hamas succeeded in reawakening the virus of antisemitism around the world, pushed some important countries to recognize Palestine and deeply divided Israel. Doing what your enemy wants you to do is rarely a good idea. YMMV.

Jetcal1's avatar

From the River to the Sea renders recognition impotent. No other country will fight for a country of Palestine when they are the aggressors.

Not directly, no, but the recognition does help legitimize the illegitimate among others, particularly those who run more on emotions and sound bites than reason and deeper dives into the facts.

The Scuttlebutt's avatar

it wasn't "reawakened" it was never sleeping, just slightly hidden as something "you don't say in public". Israel has no winning strategy here, if your theory is sound. Either "turn the other cheek" and find themselves in 1939 again, or beat the shit out of the attackers and fuck public opinion. One makes you a villain in some people's eyes, the other makes you dead. Machiavelli had a quote that is pertinent in this case. "It is good to be loved, but it is enough to be feared."

Aviation Sceptic's avatar

As noted above, reviled or dead is Israel's choice. They are choosing the "least bad" of the two. Losing (in reality, dying) with "honor" was revealed to many Israelis when a lot of their "peaceniks" who lived next to the Gaza fence were slaughtered by people who they had welcomed into their homes the day before...

You underestimate the theological mindset and poor grasp of scale.

Expecting divine assistance that would overturn normal risk calculations is a big part of the culture in Hamas thinking. The antisemitism of Western leaders who keep rewarding Hamas (such as promising to cut off aid funds and then giving aid funds) and cowardice of Israeli officials (who don't want big wars that might jeopardize elections) just reinforces it.

Further, humans naturally perceive scale logarithmically, not arithmetically, so have a poor sense of the potential for escalation. Interestingly, Gaza has an estimated average IQ of 85 and Israel has an estimated IQ of 105 so cognitive aspects of risk assessment might be substantially different. And then we get to that interesting survey where a significant chunk of Gaza's population estimated Israel's population at 500,000.

There is a fundamental disconnect in expectations akin to the Imperial Japanese Army pre-WWII.

As for Israel, they were initially very divided by the power struggle between the mostly Ashkenazi Left and the mostly Mizrahi Right noted in the judicial reform struggle. Hamas' attack unified the normally fractured Israeli politics in favor of the Right (look at the new Shin Bet chief).

The Scuttlebutt's avatar

Hence, Hamas delinda est

Jenifer Sawicki's avatar

Accidentally posted elsewhere, meant to be here in answer to Hilary Smith.

What was Hamas’s political goal? Remember that they are religious fanatics, and so assumed Allah would be forced to involve himself on their side. Also that Hamas is not only the Gazan branch of the Muslim Brotherhood (soon enough to be for both Palestinian Territories), but a paid dependent of Iran. The IDF found evidence of Iran’s plan, supplied and rehearsed for at least two years: simultaneously Hamas and Palestinian IslamicJihad would come over the border fence from the southwest, Hezbollah would come through its tunnels and over the border fence from Lebanon in the northwest, and rockets and missiles from Iran, the Houthis, Hezbollah (200,000 of ‘em), and Hamas/PIJ (20,000) would fly in from all directions, quickly overwhelming Israeli defenses. Also Palestinian fighters from the West Bank would attack their Israeli neighbours to keep them from joining in to protect the core homeland.

Long before 10/7/2023 Hamas had mapped out the governmental map and organizations for conquered Israel, and designated governors and support staff for the entire thing. Key people on those lists partook in the invasion, with more prepared to stroll in and take over once pacification was complete. Only Hamas once again jumped the gun — the third time since Israel pulled completely out of Gaza in 2006, if I recall correctly — ruining the surprise and the effect. Hezbollah, Iran, and the Houthis joined in a few weeks later, as I recall, but by then it was too late.

They knew exactly what awaited them but their perverted mentality says it's better to kill even one Israeli even if that means extended misery for themselves. Pure 100% death cult. How these misguided American students support this is beyond all comprehension.

Pete's avatar

HAMAS is a death cult. Aristotelian logic is of no use in trying to understand what or why they do anything.

It was a planned event to start a war for Iran, and the western leftist.

The goal of their sponsors in Iran was to derail cooperation between Israel and the Saudis. It worked. The embrace of anti-Semitism by European governments was just icing on the cake. The length of the war gave the Euros the excuse they had been waiting for. Rubio is correct that the Europeans have been sabotaging peace efforts and Vance is correct that we don't have common values and not just about the Jews.

“As for Gaza in 2025, I have no more sympathy than I have for Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan”

I have felt the exact same way.

When USS ENTERPRISE and USS CARL VINSON began their attacks on Afghanistan in 2001, some peaceniks wrote about concerns for the civilian (women and children) casualties.

Easy - blame the people (terrorists) who put them in harm’s way. They always blame us.

‘Peace in our time.’ They continue to be deceived regarding appeasement.

You can’t appease evil.

Honestly it’s too bad we didn’t join in when we had 46 Americans slaughtered.

It seems striking that a “peace plan” as Konstantin Kisin outlines in the video link; which appears extremely reasonable doesn’t get full airing. One is left to wonder, what are the other nations in the region saying and did they help in the construction of the plan. It would seem in their own national and the larger regional interests to get behind this “deal.” Here in the States we are treated to the dumbest clucks in the world. Imagine several Representatives to the US Congress being by all appearances anti semites (loose terms) and encouraging the war to continue. Both as a ploy to deny the Whitehouse of what they perceive as victory for Orangeman Bad and to continue a war in which the nation of Isreal is ultimately destroyed and the inhabitants “eliminated.” Said another way wiped off from the face of the earth. Meanwhile they have all the food, and drink and safety of their beds at home here in the States. No doubt there were a lot of Germans and Japanese who were civilians and were killed. But their national silence and the belligerence of their leadership led to catastrophe and many deaths. It is all a cautionary tale. Want to pick a fight? Well better be ready to take some punches in the mouth, eyes and nose. If not don’t go to war. If this peace plan has the backing of the other regional players they need to step up. Perhaps if the shattered and scattered remains of the Ottoman Empire had stood up to Sykes Picot in 1920-21, we would have an entirely different scenario. But they didn’t and we have been living with results since. Perhaps the canary in the coal mine that things were side ways was when the UN allowed Yasser Arafat to address their august body with two pistols as side arms to demonstrate his peaceable intentions. It’s been a rough go for 60 years maybe time to try something else like a 21 point peace plan.

Little known factoid...

It was the USMC and USN which shielded Arafat from certain annihilation in Beirut by the Israelis in 1982. The Marines escorted him to the port where he boarded the Greek chartered M/V Atlantis for passage to Piraeus

https://vimeo.com/96305247?fl=pl&fe=vl

Note how close aboard the DDG is at 2:34. She was so close in order to keep the Israelis from getting a Harpoon solution (or a torpedo shot from the sub known to be laying in wait) on the M/V Atlantis.

Here’s what we’re dealing with:

On multiple comment threads on Facebook, the liberals decry being cancelled after they celebrated the assassination of Charlie.

They absolutely ignore that they created cancel culture during the Biden administration.

How do you debate such hypocrisy?

They truly have zero moral compass so how do they recognize evil? They can’t.

No excuse or quarter for them. You have to put them in a permanent minority state politically.

Alan Gideon's avatar

Mr Kisin's phrase "sleight of mouth" would seem to apply. They have been telling lies for so long they cannot discern the truth.

Quibble: Cancel culture predates the Biden maladministration by a good bit.

They certainly didn't do anything to hinder it, though.

CDR Salamander, I shutter because I am and was “One of those woman”!

Today, 7 October, I sit and say to you CDR, better for you to share the Story!

In my opinion, it’s better for me, the woman, to stand “Protected” by you!

I’m breathing, remaining “Calm”.

Two thousand twenty-three (2023) years ago, King Herrod said, “Spare no Hebrew male child two years or less!”

Perhaps one thousand (1,000) years before Christ, Moses led his people across the Red Sea to shelter, some lived in the Rock Caves at Petra, Jordan.

CDR Salamander, in 2005, I was alone, in the reeds near the Roman Stadium behind the Ancient Stone Treasury. I knew then I could not trust Wissam Al-Mushir!

In about 2016, I relied on a strong man, who headed the Department of Veteran Affairs, Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore, MD.

“No worries” this honorable man told me then and again about eight (8) months later.

CDR Salamander, in my opinion, it’s better for honorable strong men to speak loud and clear! Yes, I’m a woman, I say, “Let this be so!”

I agree 100% with you CDR Salamander, Nazi Germany, Japan, Suni - Hamas Terrorists, if you start the War, shame on you!

I’m 50% Jewish; I competed winning Gymnastics “Floor Exercise” First Place to the soundtrack “Exodus”! I was only twelve (12) years old, 8th grade, New York City in the German Turn Verein, Lexington Avenue, New York City.

Jew-Haters, yes! I was a newly wed, age 40 years old, First Marriage, on Chebeaque Island, Maine, chastised by my German Father-in-Law, “Is all you think about - Money?!”

CDR Salamander, in 1991 Nurse Manager Anne Falk said to me, “The only reason I’m hiring you (Psych-Neuro Psych 5th Floor Johns Hopkins Hospital) is your father is Jewish!”

Yes, the Senior Partner at KPMG Peat Marwick, Baltimore 1990-1991, was Jewish!

American Jews do stick together because of our shared “Heritage”!

CDR Salamander you were assigned NATO, so you understand how Nations recognized or hoping to be recognized, “Stick together!”

If you take a moment in time… South Africa, 1990… the prisons … or not in the prisons, the boys were “Raped”!

In America, I read about a Father instructing her daughters to “Breed” with his Indentured servant because more help was needed on their farmlands.

Look inside President Jefferson Monticello home, we know what happened!

By force… perhaps not. By necessity, most likely.

Keeping and moving Hostages for two years… that’s a new one! Shame on those who used people for “Political Means”.

Now standby for Friday, 18 October, “No Kings Day”. Please get the word out…

Take shelter… watch from the safety of your home or someone you trust.

CDR Salamander, what do we say to those young Naval Enlisted and Officers at Norfolk, VA… ?

When the President of the USA, lands Helicopter POTUS 1 onto the deck of an American Air Craft Carrier, do our sailors shout, cheer, clap, dance and sway knowing Senior Enlisted are watching them? We are at War with Drug Cartels!

That’s the truth. I stand with you, CDR Salamander! Let’s look at some maps now… let’s prepare for 18 October 2025, shall we? Nurse Jane lights the way forward!
