Last time I saw numbers which was a few years ago there were slightly more sailors in the RN than civilian employees in the MoD. Is that still true? Even then the civilian employees were larger than the Army.
The problem is not in using civilian mariners. The problem is in choosing to throw the money to pay them away on pointless things. The Starmer government has a tendency to favor grandiose public programs that are 'shared' with a foreign government over funding day-today activities. Fund the GCAP aircraft program because it allows him to fly to Tokyo or Rome and have a grand time with his Japanese or Italian counterparts. Don't fund more Type 31 frigates (cheap workhorse equivalent to FF(X) because those aren't shared with foreigners. Spend money on Type 26 uber-frigates that are ridiculously expensive for what you get because they're shared with the Norwegians. Don't spend money buying F-35s to fill the decks of your existing carriers. Those won't get you positive meetings with friendly European politicians. Bonus: If you hand build-slots to the Norwegians, you can kick your own frigate purchases down the road and not piss the Scots off.

Watched Felton’s video the other night…sobering…as was Reese-Mogg’s on the remains of the Royal Navy. Seems to me Britain’s beyond redemption unless what’s left of British manhood rises up, tosses the Muslim immigrants out and reclaims the country for Britons. That would probably mean putting paid to most of the elite - aristocracy and all - and replacing the House of Windsor with a dynasty that actually has some stones.
