People like this gentleman are different in ways most of us can only admire and be grateful for, because their actions on our behalf (at times) defy logic. May he rest in peace, but only if (and it's a large "if") he chooses to...
Walter Cowan, and the even more spectacular Adrian Carton de Wiart, and Gen. Richard O'Connor (who in 1940 captured the entire Italian army of Cyrenaica) became POWs together in a castle in Italy following separate misadventures. No movie has ever been based on this incredible triple conjunction, with its endless cinematic possibilities!
I thought for a moment you might be describing the real story behind “The Secret War of Harry Frigg,” but that was a 1968 comedy starring Paul Newman as the title character sent to break out several Allied generals who were captured by the Italian Army during World War II.
The culling of WWI and II throughout Europe's male populations certainly has had some sort of impact on their ability to avoid emotional decision making...
agree with your thought, though not sure 'culling' is the right verb. that normally implies the killing of the bottom 10%, not the best and brightest, which is what happened in the UK.
The Grim Reaper skimmed off the cream, not the bottom of the gene pool...
I stand corrected. Because of the high rate of "self-selection" in WWI in particular, that generation's gene pool was radically changed moving forward. Perhaps the old Roman "decimation", while a punishment for cowardice at the legion level, resulted in a similar disastrous result. Open discussion on a truly awful loss of productive lives...
I will ensure that my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter in England are informed that they have been struck from the rolls of the White Christian Nationalists as certified patriots and now have melted into the darker hordes from the Third World. They will understand the need to pray that they may be allowed to return to the sanctity of MAGA Sons of Liberty and fulfil their prophetic destiny.
As a watcher of Armored Italia, I know Sir Walter's achievement with a revolver is perfectly believable, alas for the Italian tankers. Sometimes your gear is so bad you can't overcome it.
This is why I don’t like superhero movies. There are so many stories like this of TRUE heroes that have not been told. They are not bulletproof, they can’t fly and yet they do amazing things.
Well, a little dive down the rabbit hole found this in Wikipedia.
"During the incessant attacks, with scores of bombs splashing into the sea about the vessel, Cowan (believed by the commandos in whose midst he was, to be seeking a heroic death in action) was regularly to be seen on the deck blazing away at the oncoming hostile aircraft with a Tommy Gun."

Noontime in the VAMC ED, 50 Irving St N.W. Washington D.C. for this LCDR USN, Retired.
We have some racial impatience with Registered Nurses, “N”, perhaps AA, dreadlocks and wearing a white ear piece playing music into her right ear. Rude to me times twice now, on the ED bed.
Deborah the Social Worker, AA, much kinder, will come back.
Africa in the 1930’s - 1940’s and still today has issues with Caucasians.
We can hope racial relations will improve.
Pain level of 8/10 for 6 days needed treatment. First medication R. 500 mg taken at 11:55 AM.
CDR thank you for sharing names of British Heroes.. My father was Irvin Schneider, he hit the beach about 20 days after D-Day, photographed Eisenhower and returned 1945, totally mentally disabled!. My father received good care and good advice, married my mother and I was born 1953.
My only living son, age 27, is airborne flying his USAF Plane as I write this note. He returned Saturday past from Rammstein and goes where, I don’t know for 6 months! Let’s all keep him in our prayers! Thank you so much! Fly High! Semper Fei and Carry on with the Plan of the Day! Very respectfully, Nurse Jane

Geezers Rock!!!
It would make a better movie than Patton.

How did England degenerate from Sir William to Sir Keir?
Most hard core liberty lovers left for America, and have been replaced (and then some) by hordes from the Third World.
So the land of Magna Carta is now the slum of Sharia.
To be fair, during that period, second and third sons made their name and fortunes in India, and Australia, rather than the US
On the other side, the trenches of WW1, killed off the best of the Brit male lines, the leavings after the war, were very anti-war

Great story. Geez, life expectancy of 40 and a relic at 60. That makes a lot of us fossils.
I love a surprise ending.
Gotta' love the ripping yarn aspect, and forgive me for saying that something seems off about Sir Cowan.
Fullbore but weirdly driven.
It does read like a script for a Guy Ritchie move...

Since you included "walked" as well as "sailed", let me offer a guy from the ground pounder side of the UK: Adrian Carton de Wiart, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Carton_de_Wiart
