The escape of the sailor in 30-34 exactly described my Dad’s escape from the USS Utah. As that ship was rolling to port he escaped by swimming through a flooded hatch on that side. He eventually reached the deck, evaded loose Timbers on the deck, climbed onto the starboard side of the hull - nearly horizontal by then - and dove off the torpedo blister to swim to shore.
