OOOHHraaa, Heroic Soldier. Must have had something personal against the enemy!

Perhaps, but there are always people who just have something personal against giving up or running.

I have a Jagdterrier like that.

The terrier part is wild, friendly and active, the Pit Bull part is as stubborn as a rock wall, Sees Chipmunk, goes after, digs halfway to China trying to catch it LOL faced with a fight it will die before it backs up.

Nice to hear something good about the Portuguese as the big histories usually leave it with the Germans breaking them and pushing a huge gap in the lines.

another great Full Bore episode.

Easy to forget that the Portuguese produce some serious badasses. Longest-lived of the European Empires, competent navigators (unlike a certain Genoese), and probably will do an awesome reboot in the future.

Wellington thought well of his Portuguese allies during the Peninsula campaign, unlike the Spanish. Particularly the Portuguese light troops. aka Caçadores

"Portuguese Riflemen were known as Caçadores literally "Huntsmen". Portuguese Caçadores battalions were the elite light soldiers of the Portuguese Army during the Peninsular War. They wore distinctive brown uniforms for camouflage. They were considered, by the Duke of Wellington, as the "fighting cocks of his army". Each Caçadores battalion included an elite company armed with rifles known as atiradores (literally "Shooters")."

I think the Portuguese nick-name 'Malha Vacas' means spotted cows in English, he probably was a farmer.

^ You are probably right, Nomade. When I first saw "Malha Vacas" I used Google to translate it to Mesh Cow and was thinking "Holey Cow!".

I asked my wife and she said "spotted cows" makes the most sense.

We have a few thousand more readers now than last decade, so I feel comfortable bringing the best FbF up from the cellar.

The stories of heroes should be repeated. They can inspire us and help us learn.

Good one.

As I age, I am always stunned when reading about and seeing footage of WWI.

How did anyone survive?

Hard to believe Man's inhumanity to Man.

Sadly, it shall never end.

If you get a chance to visit Lisbon, there is a good museum about their Navy: https://ccm.marinha.pt/pt/museu
