Thank you, CDR Sal. Full Bore Friday is always a "lest we forget" moment for me. The signers of this document were not making an idle comment to a selfie on Facebook. "Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died from combat wounds or wartime hardships, five were captured and imprisoned by the British, and at least 12 had their homes ransacked or destroyed, with many more enduring severe financial ruin to fund the war." Important things are never easy or cheap. Let's party and enjoy the celebration and also raise a glass to those who signed and gave their all.
The signers opened themselves up to the charge of High Treason:
"... levying war against the sovereign and adhering to the sovereign's enemies, giving them aid or comfort;"
The punishment for High Treason being :
Convicted traitors were fastened by the feet to a hurdle, or wooden panel, and drawn behind a horse to the place of execution, where they were then hanged (almost to the point of death), emasculated, disembowelled, beheaded, and quartered.
Thank you. They took such a gigantic risk to bring to life our wonderful country. We are once again in enormous danger with the rise of hate America and freedom within our country.
CDR Sal, you write superbly on a host of vitally important subjects and issues, but this edition will be impossible to beat. "Divine Providence" is the only way to explain and understand men such as these, the course of the Revolution, and our remarkable founding. Thank you.
Great post and a reminder of the fact that we stand on the shoulders of giants. As to video, I always showed my kids, and now my grandkids, the movie 1776 on the Fourth. Here is the signing segment:
As an aside while at Carolina I dated a direct descendant of one of the signers but wasn't told by her of her family "tree". When I was invited down to their house in our big coastal town, I pulled up in front of what I was a hotel! I parked my 67 LeMans, knocked on the door, only to be greeted by a black gentleman in tux and tails. His words were "with whom do you wish to speak?". I was in Topsiders, jeans, and a Carolina t-shirt, and was ushered into the library. Her Father came in and closed the double doors and said " tell me your family history". No polite "good afternoon, nice to meet you, what are you majoring in?", etc. I still had no idea who "they" were, but when I got to mentioning that my Mother, Grandmother, Great, and Great Great were all Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy he pointed to a framed Declaration of Independence and said go read the names. It didn't take a genius to figure out what name I was looking for, and when I saw it, I turned and said "my retired Father told me that a man who is not willing to die for his beliefs has a hard time looking at himself in the mirror when he shaves". He nodded his head, laughed and motioned me back to the sofa. From there on it was a great weekend.
I have to say that many of the complaints listed in the Declaration sound eerily similar to what we’re currently experiencing in the USA. Interesting parallels. BZ for posting.
Long time reader and fan, but this 250th edition made me a paid subscriber. Well done.
Thank you Bill!
Ditto. Appreciate your work and perspective.

The Drill SGT: And no Medicare.
All were considered insurrectionists, had a substantial bounty on their heads and the threat of execution.
We are standing on the shoulders of giants.

I enjoy watching the socialists and Leftists ridicule America and our founding fathers but they enjoy the fruits of liberty every day.
Hypocrites!
They took a massive risk, and none recanted.
I tear up when I think of all the bravery and sacrifice it inspired, and not just among Americans, either.
" Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
John Adams
OUTSTANDING!
A miracle these men were in one place at one time. Happy Birthday All.
Proud patriot and former Marine, but Jefferson's list of grievances is looking pretty damn topical. Just saying...
Human nature hasn't changed much for the better, has it? At least we are guided by the Founders' example.

Long live The Republic. I wish peace and Liberty for my fellow Americans. Let us remember well the sacrifices made by those who came before.
