Excellent article, and sobering. Rebuilding the industrial base is critical, and will take time, money, and will.

Nice to see the midshipmen playing General Quarters, though. It looks like GQ3, which is my favorite set of rules for the period (and I have a pretty big collection of 1:2400 models, all from a small family-run outfit called Panzerschiffe, near Akron, Ohio).

As I have said several times before, the Chinese already outnumber us, and their ships are more modern and more powerful than ours, and they are in their own front yard. we, on the other hand are 7,000 miles away from that front yard - with fewer and less capable ships.

Doesn't look good to me.

I don't see hope in the Secretary of Defense and I don't see hope in the Military's embrace of DE!

Almost nobody in the Navy talks about our command, control and communications problems in any potential war with China in the South China Sea They can get by using HF and line of sight radio communication. Our fleet will be, like much of the rest our military reliant on satellite communication. Any competent Chinese commander will nuke every geosynchronous satellite on that side of the planet. Our forces are accustomed to using all manner of reconnaissance shipped to them via satellite communication
