I took the article for what it’s worth. CNO is doing his job and personal attacks by the media come with the territory. Like so many American tragedies, I know exactly where I was when ADM Boorda committed suicide all because of an upcoming hit piece by David Hackworth. It’s a tough job and that was the right response from his office.
When my daughter did an instructor tour at the QM A school at Great Lakes, if memory serves not far from the schoolhouse was a building named for the Admiral.
Every time I was there I saw the building and every time I remembered and thought what could have been.
Your comment reminded me of an incident where a ship captain colleague and friend was being railroaded by his flag officer boss and I wrote CNO Boorda a personal letter asking that he review the case when it got to him. Like CDR Salamander, I included the line about "I’d trust him with the lives of my children". In the official CNO letterhead reply, Boorda wrote in the margin that he appreciated my support for my friend and would personally look into it when the appeal got to his desk. Sooner after, he was gone. A mustang, he was a good man.
It seems to me that Adm Caudle was just telling sailors not to go stupid places with stupid people and do stupid stuff. 99.9% who follow that rule are never the "victims" of robbery, assault, or other mayhem.

Unfortunately society seems to be hesitant at teaching such things these days. It's somehow racist or homophobic or whatever. Results are the same, we have a lot of kids out doing stupid stuff and turning into adults who do stupid stuff.

I had an AFROTC cadet squadron commander in the 80s who claimed a first generation F-15A could be used as a delivery platform for tactical nuclear bombs- despite lacking a PALS interlink and an air-to-ground targeting system. He ended up commissioned.
The F15A/B was a "single mission", air to air only platform, and they never let you forget it. The disdain they had for the Mud Hens and Vipers had to be seen to be appreciated. If any 15A guy I knew heard this conversation, he'd have been demanding satisfaction with pistols at dawn the next morning. I say this as a CSAR rotary wing guy...

Their affect on the culture is broad, deep, and wide . . . and that cultural contamination has to be detected before you get anyone near nuclear power/weapons. Captain Hynes was, I think, being groomed for something higher in the Navy Nuke community. Perhaps CO of a CGN. The tour on an OHP FFG was a way to probably skirt an XO tour. But for whatever reason, he retired after leaving the FFG. Maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall. CGN's went by the wayside and CVN CO's were all Aviators. My SWO board as an OpTech CWO2 was Captain Hynes, the CHENG and CSO. Despite the guffaws at my explaining how to parallel a second diesel generator online they passed me anyway. Captain Hynes got me alone and told me to "brush up on it". Many in our wardroom thought him too demanding. I thought him pretty darned perfect. That 4 year tour on that FFG was the high point in my career. High school drop-out, 20/400 vision; mentors & karma on my side. That ship is still in commission in the Polish Navy. Wonder if they are hiring.
