Remember about 3 years ago that a popular fitness tracker - I seem to recall that it was FitBit - was displaying the fitness courses that many deployed soldiers were running on? And I seem to recall that Russian soldiers were showing up on the same apps.

Our youngsters need to learn the old lesson that "Loose Lips Sink Ships".

The fitness app you're thinking of is Strava.

The Army needs to have a greater emphasis on holistic OPSEC, including signal & digital device, security. While OPSEC is an operations function, the intelligence officer typically is tasked with the execution of OPSEC. It is a good alignment given the security concerns of INSCOM and would be strengthened if USAICOE regained EW as part of its portfolio. The US Army's INSCOM is comprised of intelligence and security. The security function must receive a greater emphasis. USAICOE had EW as part of its portfolio (until 2003)., when it divested it for other capabilities in the low-intensity counterinsurgency fight.

I can say with certainty that the concerns you raise in this post have not gone unnoticed by the IW community. There have been a lot of work done over the last several years on TTPs and tools to try and find and cut down on unauthorized Personal Electronic Device (PED) usage. I wouldn't say that the problem has been completely cracked; likely, nothing short of a full ban on such devices aboard ship would be truly effective. The Russians did this, but they don't have to deal with the recruiting problems such a policy would inevitably create!

We all know the tracking capabilities, ( or should i say probabilities ) and the danger that it poses, yet we cant seem to muster up the will to avoid using the devices that are the tools by which it's done with..I believe that when enough peoples lives are negatively affected by carrying around these tracking devices, they will no longer be popular.- My Father 1992

How about just turning the damned thing off when you're out and about, or is that just too simple to comprehend?

Better yet,do something that works.Put the phone in a metal box grounded to your car's metal parts(like dashboard supports) when driving. It works every time.Turning it off doesn't Any phone can be 'pinged',even if turned off, giving away your location.
