I'm just unsold that we should be expanding our navy. The only two threats that seriously affect our navy right now are China and Iran.
Moreover, neither of these countries are real threats to the United States. Instead, they are threats to regional stability, which we just shouldn't be in the business of policing anymore.
Let India, Taiwan and Japan figure out what to do about China and Saudi Arabia, China and India (the main sellers and buyers of Middle Eastern oil) figure out what to do about the Straights of Hormuz.
Any country that controls us economically, controls us in all other areas. And China’s published intentions are to be the single most powerful country on the globe. But the D.C. crowd won’t publicly admit that or do anything about it. The PLAN’s budget for 2020-2021 had no COVID-19 interruptions. And, by the way, they want to control Africa’s resources, as well as the China Sea.
If world oil prices had nothing to do with the amount of oil being exported from the Middle East, I would largely agree with you concerning Iran. But since oil is fungible, I have to disagree. The Navy’s problem vis-a-vis Iran is that, frankly, we haven’t had any existential threats in the past 20 years. As a result, the Navy itself has gotten lost along the way. We’ve gotten sloppy and distracted by non-military agendas.
